The new Sydney Modern in Sydney - Kengo Kuma

The Sydney Modern Project aims to transform the Art Gallery of New South Wales, in Sydney, expanding its contribution to Sydney's culture, social life and economy. The vision for the Sydney Modern is an inspirational design for the 21st century that will excite and engage audiences locally, nationally and internationally.

The Sydney Modern Project will link the existing gallery with a new building featuring dynamic spaces for major exhibitions and collection displays, a multipurpose theatre, learning and interactive spaces and expanded restaurant, cafe and event spaces.

Twelve offices were initially invited to submit their ideas for the contest, and were later cut back to a shortlist of five: SANAA, Kengo Kuma & Associates, Kerry Hill Architects, RMA Architects and Sean Godsell Architects.

Tomorrow collaborated with Kengo Kuma in two phases to give character to their architecture. The Art Gallery will be built as an entrance gate to the highway. Tomorrow worked with an evening image to create strong focus on the architecture with warm artificial lighting in contrast to the blue, cold evening light.
